Johnny Clarke “Blood Dunza”

While maybe not as internationally famous as his fellow performers Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs, in Jamaica during the second half of the 70’s he ranks alongside them and was certainly one of the most popular founder members of the Dance Hall style. After initially working with Clancy Eccles, Johhny was recognised as a potential talent by Rupie Edwards who went on to record several successful records with him as lead vocalist. After Rupie’s failure to share any of the credit with Johnny he teamed up with Bunny Lee as his producer and went onto record a string of hits. These include “None shall escape the Judgement”, “African Roots”, “Peace in the Ghetto” and “Blood Dunza” (Dunza meaning money.)

Reggae That Inspired UB40.

As probably the best known reggae band after Bob Marley & The Wailers, UB40 have never made any secret of the the fact that not only were they inspired by reggae, but they also had many hits by covering tracks originally recorded by Jamaican reggae artists. It was the reggae recording of “Red, Red Wine” by Tony Tribe (although an original Neil Diamond hit in the 60’s) that led to UB40 covering it themselves. Other major hits were scored with versions of “Cherry Oh Baby”, “Many Rivers to Cross”, “Kingston Town”, “Impossible Love” and “Here I am”, of which all the original reggae recordings are featured on this album. In fact all the songs included on this CD are the original reggae recordings of songs later recorded by UB40, mostly on their “Labour of Love “ projects.

Homage to Bob Marley

Bob Marley, as well as becoming the first Reggae Superstar is also revered in Jamaica as the man who proved you could rise from the ghetto of Trenchtown to stardom. This is reflected in the number  of his songs which have been covered by his countrymen both during his lifetime and after his untimely death in 1981.

The reggae scene in Jamaica is also a highly flexible scene and as such many of the artists or musicians on this album have also played with Marley in the past. Many of his classic songs including “Soul Rebel”, “I Shot the Sheriff”, “No Woman no Cry”, “Kaya”, “Stir it Up” and Sun is Shining” are covered on this recording by some of Jamaica’s finest recording artists paying homage to the great man.
