Great British Skiffle - volume 4

The fourth volume in this series is as fresh and fun filled as the previous 3 volumes of British Skiffle released on Smith & Co. The young enthusiastic musicians who discovered American R&B and Blues and gave it what was to become a uniquely British music style were unbelievably productive during the latter half of the fifties.
All the great names featured on the previous releases are on show again with yet more skiffle of their hits as well as many hidden gems which have been discovered with the help of feedback from many of the fans who have bought the albums.

With all three volumes released to date still selling on a weekly basis, this album, once again packed to the limit with 59 tracks, will be a sure fire addition for all collectors of the “Just about as good as it gets! “ series.

Great British Rock ‘n Roll - vol. 4

Love it or hate it, Britain had a Rock ‘n’ Roll scene in the late fifties. It even had it Rock ‘n’ Roll stars such as Marty Wilde, Cliff Richard, Tommy Steele and Billy Fury. These rocking musicians are the artists that had your parents (I’m assuming that primarily younger people will be reading these sales notes) and, in many instances, your grand parents, dancing their pants off on a Saturday night. That’s why, despite some derogatory mutters from certain persons about British Rock ‘n’ Roll, the previous 3 volumes of “Great British Rock ‘n’ Roll” are still selling every month. Pure nostalgia, memories of good times and some damn good songs, original or covers, is what makes this series of releases sell. Volume 4 is no exception! Packed with great tracks from the likes of not only the artists mentioned above, but also Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Vince Taylor, Mort Shuman (then resident in the UK), Larry Page, Tony Crombie and Adam Faith as well as many others lesser names make this another ‘must have’ collection. 70 all time gems from a wonderful era of British music.

Great Rockabilly - volume 4

Yet another fantastic collection of un-missable Rockabilly classics to add the previous three volumes. This series has now reached has established itself as the leading Rockabilly label and volume 4 does not disappoint. Bulging with no less than 70 tracks, all caringly mastered to give superb sound quality, this double compilation features all the famous names of the era including the King “Elvis’ along with Ricky Nelson, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochrane, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins and Rose Maddox as well as some deliciously obscure names such as Dwight Pullen, Peanuts Wilson or Lafayette Yardborough. Of course there is a good smattering of names that later were to become legends in the Country Music Charts. These include the likes of George Jones, Don Gibson and Johnny Cash, all of whom flirted with Rockabilly before deciding on their successful country careers.

Once again, a wonderful addition to the series that will not disappoint!

Great Rock ‘n Roll Intrumentals - volume 2

Volume One received 4 and 5 star reviews and has been selling consistently since the day it was released. Hailed as a magnificent addition to the “Just about as good as it gets! “ series, we had no choice but to bring a second volume of classic American Rock ‘n’ Roll Instrumentals to a demanding public. 64 lovingly mastered recordings feature on this double collection bringing us more of those instrumental goodies that were consistently charting in the late fifties as well as some diamonds that never reached this side of the Atlantic or, for that matter, made much of an impression at the time stateside! We have also taken a bit of poetic license here and there and you may detect a vocal now and then, but in each case the vocal is, or should be, subservient to the wonderful instrumentalist which we are trying to highlight. .

Cliff Richard

It hardly seems necessary to write sales notes for Cliff Richard; what can we say about him that hasn’t been said before. Unquestionably Britain’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll star, Cliff’s career which started in the late 50’s and is still running 60 years on, he has to be a living legend. However, as with Elvis, many of us feel his best days were undoubtedly when he was a rock ‘n’ roller rather than his later ballad and crooner years.
This double compilation puts together all his recordings from the last years of the 50’s including some recordings from his first film outing. Many feature the Drifters as backing band who of course then mutated into the Shadows. Simply the best of Cliff in the 50’s this 70 track double album will delight both old and new fans. A great addition to the series.

Lonnie Donegan

It seems that the world just can’t get enough of the late, great Lonnie Donegan so the story continues in volume 2 . This double album takes over where the first volume ended in 1956 and takes us up to 1959, without doubt the most successful period of his career in chart terms. Of course the Skiffle purist will have us believe that Lonnie deserted his roots during this period and went “pop’! Horror of horrors, but as most purists seem to forget, an artist not only needs to not only make hay while the sun shines, hopefully garnering enough success to keep a roof over their heads for the remainder of their lives, but they also need to move on musically. His hit period, starting with ‘Cumberland Gap’ through to ‘Sal’s got a sugar lip’ and everything in between are included on these 2 CD’s as well as other tracks which every Skiffle and/or Lonnie Donegan fan should have. Due to the progressive nature of Lonnie at this stage of his career (tongue firmly in cheek) you will notice that the length his recording were becoming longer, so we have only been able to squeeze 55 tracks on to this compilation.
